Your studies will target protein machines that regulate elementary aspects of signal transduction and protein folding in a cellular setting.

Using NMR, you will map conformational states of a membrane protein en route to its native folded state or during function in response to changes in the physiochemical environment. These Local Scholarships experiments will allow you to obtain a comprehensive map of the conformational landscape of such a biomolecular machine in a native-like environment. Such information is of vital relevance to understand cellular viability and function and offers unprecedented structural insight at the interface of structural and cellular biology.

Description of profile area

AMT is one of the 11five-year profile areas of Leiden University that transcend the boundaries between specialist fields. Doctoral (Ph.D.) Fellowships

Ph.D. fellows are expected to conduct research leading to a Ph.D. thesis on a topic, country or region, and discipline relevant to AMT. The three fellowships are open in terms of research topic, disciplinary orientation and supervision by one of more members of senior academic staff at Leiden University who specialize in the study of Asia. The first Stanford Geological Survey, June 1893.
A separate school for Earth sciences was established at Stanford in 1947—although it was known at that time as the School of Mineral Sciences. The Earth sciences have been at the heart of Stanford’s academic program since the university’s beginnings, however, when John Casper Branner was hired as Stanford’s first professor in 1891. In 1913, Branner became Stanford’s second president. He brought to Stanford his private geological library, which contained about 5,000 volumes. That collection grew to become the foundation of the Branner Earth Sciences Library, housed in the Mitchell Building, and now home to about 125,000 volumes and some 270,000 sheet maps.The original Department of Geology had changed its name to the Department of Geology and Mining by 1898, reflecting its focus on the search for and extraction of natural resources during that period of Western development. Petroleum studies were added in 1914. By 1930, petroleum and mining were moved to the School of Engineering, and geology was part of the School of Physical Sciences.he School of Mineral Sciences was created in 1947, with A.I. Levorsen, a petroleum geologist as its inaugural dean. There were no departments in the newly formed school. Fields covered included geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineering, with plans to later include ceramic engineering and marine geology. Charles Park, a mining engineer, followed Levorsen as dean in 1950, and by 1962 the renamed School of Earth Sciences had reorganized into four departments: Geology, Geophysics, Mineral Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering.During the tenure of the school’s next dean, Richard Jahns (1965-79) the Ruth Wattis Mitchell Building was completed in 1970, accommodating new analytical and experimental equipment, and the fields of ore deposits, hydrogeology, engineering geology, and remote sensing were combined into a new Department of Applied Earth Sciences.
Allan Cox, a geophysicist, became dean in 1979, followed by George Thompson, also a geophysicist, in 1987. Thompson had been instrumental in establishing the Department of Geophysics in the 1950s. Gary Ernst came to Stanford Earth Sciences as dean in 1989 (the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake struck the month following Ernst’s arrival, closing Geology Corner for the duration of his tenure.) Ernst played a major role in the creation of the Earth Systems Program in 1992. In 1993, the Departments of Applied Earth Sciences and Geology combined to form the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences (bringing the school’s total number of departments to three: Geological and Environmental Sciences, Geophysics, and Petroleum Engineering.)Lynn Orr assumed the deanship in 1994 and led a review of the school’s academic program that identified a commitment to research strength in six areas: geochemistry and geochronology; sedimentary systems, basin structure, and evolution; continental dynamics; fluid flow in the Earth’s crust; environmental Earth sciences; and a new ocean margins program. The Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (now the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources, E-IPER) received degree-granting approval during his tenure in 2001.Pamela Matson became the school’s eighth dean in 2002. Matson, an interdisciplinary Earth scientist who studies chemical interactions among soils, water, plants, and atmosphere, had served as the director of the Earth Systems Program since 1999. During her tenure as dean, the school added a fourth department, the Department of Environmental Earth System Science, and the Department of Petroleum Engineering changed its name to the Department of Energy Resources Engineering. Matson led a major strategic planning effort that resulted in 2005 in a new strategic plan for the school and a new vision: that of the Stanford School of Earth Sciences as a world leader in Earth and environmental sciences and engineering, one which creates, integrates, and transforms fundamental understanding of Earth processes, and uses that knowledge to help provide energy, water, and a safe and sustainable planet. The Centre (which is a member of the Association of Research Institutes in Art History ARIAH) has two complementary purposes: to contribute to the understanding of British art and architecture and to act as a research centre for scholars working in this field.

Detail:
Senior Fellowships are designated for established scholars in the field of British art or architectural history for the specific purpose of completing a book or other such major study for immediate publication. Fellowships are offered either as a stipend to the Fellow or, if appropriate, to fund a temporary replacement at the institution to which the Fellow is attached. The Centre also welcomes projects which involve matched funding and collaborative work.

Criteria:
Each Fellowship is offered for up to twelve months, and must be used on a full-time basis. Applicants are required to demonstrate that their manuscript can be completed within the period they specify. Scholars are offered a place of work, if desired, either at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London or the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. The maximum award for a Senior Fellowship is £30,000. If a Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Senior Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award. Fellowships must be completed by the end of the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. Fellowships cannot be deferred nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Electron Transport via Four-Probe Scanning Tunneling Microscopy 2010

The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in the Imaging Functionality group. The applicant is expected to have experience in instrument or technique development and will conduct research involving the use of cryogenic four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for the study of electron transport and the photovoltaic effect in nanostructures and heterojunctions. The CNMS (http://cnms.ornl.gov/) is a nanoscience user research facility supported by the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy. The CNMS has a diverse spectrum of nanoscience research activities including a nanofabrication facility; laboratory-based research on macromolecular materials, catalysts, and functional nanomaterials; characterization with electron microscopes, scanning probes, and x-ray diffraction and scattering; and theory, modeling, and simulation.

Qualifications:

This position requires a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics or a related field, with a background in instrument development, cryogenic STM and transport research in nanoscale and mesoscopic structures. Experience with low temperature-STM, molecular beam epitaxy, surface analytical techniques, and photovoltaic effect is desirable. The successful candidate should be motivated and have superior UHV laboratory skills. Presentations at national meetings and publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals are expected. The applicant must have the ability to work in a team and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues. Excellent English oral and written communication skills must be demonstrated.

Monbukagakusho , the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) offers various scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan. In Ethiopia, the Ministry offers scholarship programs for College of Technology Students.

IMPORTANT:
The three MEXT scholarship programs are now open and applications can be submitted up until 31 May 2010.

Only those who with ETHIOPIAN NATIONALITY may apply through the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia. NON ETHIOPIAN citizens should apply through the Japanese Embassy/Consulates in their country of citizenship.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 20 / PRNewswire / - Thousands of students can join at 37 degrees offered by career colleges hoped to earn in Ohio can not afford to start or continue their education.
